Local Vibrations Bring Global Connections To African Children
Event: Live Music Dance Concert & Auction Fundraiser
Date: July 9th 8 pm -11pm
Location: Mission Oak Grill, 26 Green Street, Newburyport, MA
Who: The event is produced by Small Solutions Big Ideas (www.smallsolutionsbigideas.org), a young, determined Newburyport based non-profit focused on African community empowerment through education and technology. Small Solutions is powered by a compassionate group of area business owners and volunteers, and was confounded by Sandra Thaxter, Edo Kombana and Alan Papert of Newburyport.
Join us on Friday, July 9th at Mission Oak Grill in Newburyport for a “ A Black & White Night”. The live music boasts an impressive lineup of well known regional performers like: Sweet Willie D, Ken Clark, Liz Frame & the Kickers with guest appearances by vocalist Lisah Plumley, and Zak’s Drum Studio Drummers. These musicians have offered their talent to contribute to the connection of African children in Kenya and Tanzania to this community by the sea, Newburyport.
The live auction and raffles for the night will feature among other offerings: A three hour Boston harbor cruise (for 49 people) aboard a 65 foot yacht ,The Full Moon (a 1948 restored vessel).
One hundred percent of the evening’s proceeds will go directly to purchase those famous little workhorses, the XO computers developed by the One Laptop Per Child Foundation. They are small, green and white, low power and built for kids. Kids can chat with each other, and learn to use video cameras and audio recordings. Small Solutions has already placed XOs in village schools where they are used to teach HIV/AIDS in addition to expanding basic education.
A Newburyport scientist/inventor, Hans Iker, has been working with Small Solutions and has developed miniature windmills, from recycled materials, that will be able to power the XO’s.
“Connectivity to information is a critical resource for education. All you have to do to raise your level of compassion for isolated, undereducated, children in this world is… imagine yourself without your cell phone, or computer access for even one day. ” said Diane Gage, the volunteer event producer.
